WhatsApp vs Telegram is usually debated around messaging features. But if you're on Freetring, you care about calling. Which app delivers better voice quality? Which is more reliable on hotel Wi-Fi? Which is actually encrypted? We tested both specifically for calling performance.
The short answer: WhatsApp wins for everyday reliability. Telegram wins for power features. But the details matter — especially around encryption, where the reality is the opposite of what most people assume.
Final Score
2 categories tied
For calling: WhatsApp wins on reliability. Telegram wins on features.
Head-to-Head: 12 Calling Categories
Voice call quality
WhatsApp
WhatsApp
Excellent — prioritizes stability over features. Rarely drops even on 1 Mbps
Telegram
Good — cleaner on strong connections, but less forgiving on weak WiFi
💡 WhatsApp will degrade audio quality to keep the call alive. Telegram may disconnect entirely.
Video call quality
Telegram
WhatsApp
Good — up to 32 participants, stable but basic
Telegram
Better on strong connections — HD, screen sharing, noise suppression
💡 Telegram wins on features (screen share, noise cancellation). WhatsApp wins on reliability across more network conditions.
WhatsApp
Up to 32 people (all can speak)
Telegram
Up to 1,000 viewers (30 can broadcast video)
💡 For small family/friend calls, WhatsApp's 32-person limit is plenty. For events, webinars, or communities, Telegram's 1,000-person capacity wins.
Encryption (calls)
WhatsApp
WhatsApp
End-to-end encrypted by default — always
Telegram
E2E only in Secret Chats/calls. Regular calls use server encryption
💡 WhatsApp uses the Signal Protocol for all calls. Telegram uses MTProto — secure, but Telegram's servers can theoretically access regular call metadata.
Privacy / data collection
Telegram
WhatsApp
Collects metadata: who, when, how long, device info. Shared with Meta
Telegram
Collects less metadata. Independent company, not owned by Big Tech
💡 WhatsApp encrypts content but harvests metadata for ads. Telegram collects less data and has no advertising business model (yet).
WhatsApp
Available in video calls (added 2023)
Telegram
Available in video calls + voice chats
💡 Both support it now, but Telegram's implementation is smoother and works in voice-only chats too.
Noise suppression
Telegram
WhatsApp
Basic — no user-facing controls
Telegram
Built-in noise suppression with toggle
💡 Telegram gives you control over noise suppression. WhatsApp handles it automatically with no settings.
Data usage (voice calls)
Tie
WhatsApp
~0.5 MB/min — very efficient
Telegram
~0.4 MB/min — slightly more efficient
💡 Both are excellent on data. A 30-minute voice call uses roughly 12–15 MB on either app.
Multi-device calling
Telegram
WhatsApp
Call from phone, desktop, or web — linked devices
Telegram
Call from any device independently — true multi-device
💡 Telegram's cloud architecture means you can make calls from any device without your phone being online. WhatsApp still requires the phone for initial linking.
User base (who has it)
WhatsApp
WhatsApp
2+ billion users — nearly everyone globally
Telegram
900 million users — popular in specific regions
💡 The person you want to call almost certainly has WhatsApp. They may not have Telegram. This alone makes WhatsApp the practical choice for most people.
File sharing in calls
Telegram
WhatsApp
100 MB limit, compresses images/video
Telegram
2 GB limit, no compression option available
💡 If you need to share large files during a call, Telegram is dramatically better.
WhatsApp
No — app-to-app only
Telegram
No — app-to-app only
💡 Neither app can call regular phone numbers. For that, use Dingtone, Viber Out, or Google Voice.

⚡ The Encryption Truth Nobody Talks About
Most people think Telegram is "the secure one." It's not — at least not for calls. WhatsApp encrypts every single call end-to-end by default using the Signal Protocol. Nobody, not even Meta, can listen to your calls.
Telegram only encrypts calls end-to-end in Secret Chat mode. Regular calls use Telegram's server-side encryption — meaning Telegram's servers could theoretically access call data. Most users never enable Secret Chat.
However, WhatsApp's parent company Meta collects extensive metadata about who you call, when, how long, and from which device. Telegram collects significantly less metadata. So: WhatsApp protects your call content better; Telegram protects your call metadata better. Neither is perfect.

+Our Verdict
For everyday calling: WhatsApp. It's more reliable, works better on weak connections, everyone has it, and every call is encrypted end-to-end. It just works.
For power users: Telegram. Screen sharing, noise suppression, 1,000-person video calls, 2 GB file sharing, and true multi-device support make it the better tool for communities and events.
Best answer: Use both. WhatsApp for family and daily calls. Telegram for groups, communities, and when you need advanced features. Neither can call real phone numbers — for that, see our guide to free calling apps.
