Viber offers something unique: free encrypted messaging plus the ability to call real phone numbers at cheap rates (Viber Out). It’s the closest replacement for Skype’s paid calling feature. Dominant in Eastern Europe, Philippines, and Middle East.
This Viber review highlights Viber Out as the killer feature — Viber international calling from just $0.01/min. Call any phone number — landline or mobile — at rates from $0.01/min. Monthly plans available for frequent callers. This is what Skype used to do, and Viber does it better with a modern app.
Dominant in specific regions. If your contacts are in Eastern Europe (Serbia, Ukraine, Greece, Belarus), Southeast Asia (Philippines, Myanmar), or the Middle East, Viber is likely their primary messaging app. In these regions, Viber IS WhatsApp.
Communities are massive. Viber Communities support unlimited members with admin tools, pinned messages, and moderation. This makes it powerful for businesses, interest groups, and local communities in Viber-dominant markets.
Unlike WhatsApp or Signal, Viber shows ads in chats, the explore tab, and between stories. There’s no official ad-free subscription. This significantly degrades the user experience compared to cleaner alternatives.
In Western Europe, the Americas, and most of Asia, Viber is largely irrelevant. WhatsApp dominates these markets. Installing Viber to chat with one or two contacts feels redundant when everyone else uses WhatsApp.
Viber is owned by Rakuten, a Japanese e-commerce conglomerate. While messages are E2E encrypted, Rakuten does collect usage data for advertising purposes. If privacy is paramount, Signal is the better choice.
Viber is a good app trapped in a shrinking market. This Viber review finds it’s worth using — but only if your contacts already have it. If your contacts use Viber, it’s excellent — Viber Out for landline calls, encrypted messaging, massive communities. If they don’t, there’s no compelling reason to install it over WhatsApp.
Our advice: Use Viber if you have contacts in Eastern Europe, Philippines, or Middle East. Use Viber Out as your Skype replacement for international landline calling. Otherwise, WhatsApp + Signal covers everything better.
